AHF RECEIVES TRUST AWARD OF EXCELLENCE IN PHILANTHROPY

On Friday, January 19, 2024 at University of San Diego’s 20th Annual Nonprofit Governance Symposium, The Nonprofit Institute (NPI) awarded AHF with the inaugural award for governance in the field of philanthropy called the TRUST Award of Excellence in Philanthropy for Governance Practices, Social Equity and Community Impact. The award spotlights the work of a public or private foundation board that aligns their mission with community needs, responsibly manages resources, upholds transparency, and contributes to long-term positive impacts in the areas they aim to address.

We were honored to receive this recognition and are very proud of the work and culture of our Board of Trustees, which has been developed and nurtured for more than 35 years.

As stated by Laura Deitrick, co-executive director of The Nonprofit Institute, “Their (AHF) governance practices demonstrated a strong commitment to learning from the nonprofits they support as well as an emphasis on integrating a variety of voices and perspectives into their grantmaking.”

STORM RELIEF CONTINUES | $100K TO SUPPORT URGENT NEEDS AND LOCAL RESPONSE EFFORTS

 The storms may have temporarily subsided, but there are still many displaced families and businesses that suffered great losses during the back-to-back series of storms impacting San Diego. As individuals, families and businesses clean up and try to re-build their lives and livelihoods, they are being aided and comforted by many caring organizations and volunteers. In addition to AHF staff volunteering their time at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA (thank you Barbara Orozco-Valdivia and Melanie Mijares), we also provided $100k in emergency funding for clothing, transportation, cleaning supplies and basic hygiene kits to the following organizations:

• Harvey Family Foundation
• Pillars of the Community
• The Urban Collaborative Project
• Jackie Robinson Family YMCA
• The Chicano Federation
• County of San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce as a partner in The Strategic Alliance which also includes the Asian Business Association and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

2024 MISSION SUPPORT GRANTEE SPOTLIGHTS

RISE San Diego – Improving communities, changing minds

Rise San Diego is changing the landscape of leadership! The agency is focused on their mission of elevating urban leadership through dialogue-based civic engagement, nonprofit partnerships and direct training and support. Sometimes the reasons include coming together to combat or resist adverse circumstances in the community; sometimes it’s to raise awareness for improved diversity, equity, and inclusion. Together, we all RISE!

Second Chance – Breaking the cycle of incarceration 

For more than 30 years, Second Chance has been working to break the cycle of incarceration through safe, sober living, and early intervention programs for youth and adults.

Did you know? One in three American adults has a criminal record, limiting their access to education, jobs, housing, and other resources needed to achieve self-sufficiency.

At San Diego Second Chance, justice-involved adults and youth are given the life-saving resources needed to break the cycle of addiction, poverty, and incarceration. Their program helps individuals achieve sobriety, secure employment, and create a better life.

Ringing the bell marks a significant achievement, like securing a full-time job or being admitted to an education program. Over the last three decades, Second Chance has enjoyed many bell ringing ceremonies!

2024 Mission Support Grantees:

The Mission Support grant is a three-year, unrestricted, core operating support grant that ranges from $25,000 to $30,000 per year for each organization. Organizations may use the funds in any way that best meets the most pressing needs of the clients they serve. 

“Supporting great organizations is vital to our mission. Through our Mission Support grant program, Alliance aims to provide funding to organizations that align with our mission to advance health equity with an explicit focus on underserved and marginalized communities and specifically communities of color,” stated Sarah Lyman, Executive Director, Alliance Healthcare Foundation. “We’re seeking partners with strong leadership in eliminating equity gaps and addressing social determinants of health.”
