Established in 1988, Community HousingWorks (CHW) is a nationally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to developing, rehabilitating, preserving, and managing affordable apartment communities across California and Texas. CHW goes beyond providing affordable housing—they create opportunities for residents to thrive, by offering stable homes in healthy communities alongside impactful programs, services, and connections to essential resources. We empower working families and older adults to achieve financial stability, enhance their health and well-being, and support school-age children in reaching their full potential.

Forming the Community

This project began at La Costa Paloma, a North County property in Carlsbad, California that provides housing for 180 families and over 600 residents. This initiative focuses on the creation of a vibrant community garden, designed to provide residents with access to fresh produce, encourage sustainable living, and foster a deeper sense of community engagement. Through this project, residents of all ages have the opportunity to participate in gardening activities, learn about nutrition and sustainability, and take an active role in maintaining a shared green space. By working together, the project aims to promote food security, environmental awareness, and a stronger, more connected neighborhood.

The community garden at La Costa Paloma has quickly become a cherished space, fostering connection and collaboration among residents. What started as a small initiative has blossomed into a vibrant hub of activity, where neighbors come together to cultivate fresh produce, share gardening tips, and build a deeper sense of community. The garden represents the dedication to create a welcoming and beautiful environment for everyone who calls La Costa Paloma home.

Cultivating Future Leaders

The next phase of the project aims to integrate the after-school program and their families into the garden's growth and property beautification. Through activities like planting days, workshops, and art projects, the initiative encourages a love for nature, responsibility, and intergenerational collaboration while enhancing the property. The youth in CHW's Afterschool Program at La Costa Paloma engage in STEM-based horticulture lessons, maintaining their own garden spaces year-round, which deepens their understanding of environmental stewardship, teamwork, and sustainable practices.

The Resident Leadership Academy's Commitment

Meanwhile, the Resident Leadership Academy (RLA) members remain deeply invested in the garden's success. They have shown remarkable dedication in caring for the plants, ensuring that the space is well-maintained and thriving. Together, with the involvement of all residents, the garden stands as a symbol of what can be achieved through collective effort and shared vision.

The Resident Leadership Academy’s 2025 cohort is focusing its Community Improvement Project on expanding and enhancing the garden by collaborating with community partners to add new plants, sustainable features, and creative landscaping.

Growing Together for a Stronger Future

This project is thriving thanks to the continued dedication of residents, community partners, and the Community Health Improvement Program (CHIP). Together, we’re building a sustainable garden, fighting food insecurity, and fostering a healthier, more resilient community for years to come.
